Default Here’s an idea – let’s put nuclear reactors in airplanes ….

Oh wait …. It’s been done already. Flew one over West Texas and Southern New Mexico in the mid 50’s.

A one megawatt air-cooled nuclear reactor was fitted in the bomb bay of the NB-36H – a modified Convair B-36 and ….

“Between 1955 and 1957, the NB-36H completed 47 test flights and 215 hours of flight time, during 89 of which the reactor was critical.”

How ‘bout those wacky engineers back then ?? Some scary shiz really.

Today’s renewed interest in advanced Thorium Molten Salt Reactors (TMSR) prompted the look back. The Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) made possible a brief look at Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (ANP).

Like all them acronyms ??
